Be In Harmony With Autumn

AUTUMN IS - the pivot point when the “yang,” or active phase, transitions into the “yin,” or passive phase. It’s a time of turning. Leaves are turning color and dropping to the Earth to provide new life in the future. Nature reminds us of our own cycles. Many of us hold onto old patterns. We need to let go of what no longer serves us and be more receptive to the new. This helps us move forward.

AUTUMN IS - associated with the metal element in Chinese medicine. When in balance with this element, we will be more flexible and malleable. When out of balance, we will be indifferent and too formal and distant.

AUTUMN IS - associated with the lungs and the color white. In Qi Gong, the lungs are the commander of qi. Flows like Buddha Holds up the Earth, Soaring Crane, and Great Bear Swims in the Ocean strengthen the lungs. Exercises like Soaring Eagle stretch the intercostal muscles by the rib cage. Wave breathing enhances how slow and deep you breathe.

AUTUMN IS – the season to eat warm, nourishing foods such as soups and stews. Orange foods such as pumpkin, butternut squash, and sweet potatoes are good qi tonics. Nourish your lungs with pears, apples, persimmons, nuts, and seeds. Support your large intestines with foods high in fiber, which helps eliminate waste and prevent constipation.

7 Things To Do This Autumn

Let go: What can you let go of that is no longer serving you?

Slow down: Breathe deeply and try to enjoy everything around you.

Exercise the lungs: Get in some good cardio work outdoors if you can.

Sleep longer: Get 8 hours + of sleep a night.

Drink herbal teas: oolong, golden pue-erh, chai, jasmine.

Get inspired:. Revisit a book, go to an art museum, practice qi gong.

Get organized: The metal element thrives on structure and organization. Organization creates space for ideas, imagination, and planning.
