Good Vibes in Summer

How do the seasons affect our bodies? How can we live in natural rhythm with the world? Summer is about joy, contentment and connection. Connections are the heart and soul of life and real vitality. We want to connect with our authentic self; that soul, spirit, essence of who we are. We covet a connection with others; family, friends and community. We want a sense of belonging to our ancestors, the natural world and our God/higher power.

Summer is about CONNECTIONS.

Summer is the most yang time in nature. There is a balance between attending social events and being in one’s hammock or garden. In Chinese medicine, fire is the element associated with summer, as well as the heart and the color red. In Qi Gong, purify your heart with flows like Cloudy Hands, Coming Home to the Heart, and Embrace the Wind, Caress the Moon.

Local seasonal fruits and vegetables are a great summer choice. Check out the farmer’s markets near you. If it’s hot, eat cooling foods that will be very satisfying. Our summer diet may be lighter than other seasons.

Summer diet tips:

  • Cooling foods: cucumber, spinach, tomato, salads, yogurt, fish

  • Fruit: apple, lemon, kiwi, watermelon, dark plums, orange, tangerine, pear, peaches, pineapple

  • Drinks: Lots of water, watermelon juice, green tea (it disperses summer heat and can expel toxins, cool the heart fire, calm the mind).

Enjoy your summer:

  • Don’t sleep too much

  • Stay physically active

  • Allow the great outdoors to recharge you

  • Vacation and travel

  • Have a connection with yourself first; then connect with others
