Be in Harmony with Spring

In the practice of Qi Gong we pay close attention to the changing of the seasons and how we can become attuned to the natural rhythm of the world.  Spring is the season for growth, renewal, creativity, transformation, and resiliency.

In Chinese medicine, spring is associated with the liver, the wood element, and the color green. The liver filters the blood and is also connected to the eyes. Spring offers change and is a time of hope. We want to cultivate strength, yet have the flexibility to handle growth and the changes that come with it. Thus, we want to cultivate resiliency.

Flows connected with spring are Tree Sways in the Wind and Repulse the Monkey. Bamboo in the Wind is an exercise that allows the energy to go where it’s needed. In addition, standing postures like Embrace the Tree and Lower Embrace the Tree are tonifying.

Activities such as walking in the woods, planting a garden, and practicing Qi Gong can boost your spring energy. Here are some other things you can do to be in harmony with spring:

  • Take yourself outdoors as much as possible

  • Get a facial to slough off that winter skin

  • Spring clean your home and de-clutter

  • Eat more green vegetables and sour foods (lemons, limes)

  • Forgive as much as you can

  • Try something new

  • Laugh!
